Anyone around here into magic? I don't mean the occult or real magic. I mean card tricks, sawing chicks in half, pulling quarters out of a friend's ear, etc. I have never been into it, but enjoy a good magic show as much as the next guy. My son recently got a couple of cheap magic tricks at a birthday party and loves doing them. In doing a bit of research about a set for beginners for Christmas, I ended up watching some magic shows on you tube. I think most people have heard of Penn & Teller (I saw them in Vegas about 10 years ago). They did a TV series in England last year where magicians performed tricks for them, and if PT were fooled, they won a trip to Vegas to perform at PT's show. I found myself getting hooked on learning about how these tricks were all done. Pretty interesting stuff, and much of it can be learned on the web with some digging around. What's also interesting is that even if you learn how they do it, the skill these guys have is quite amazing, and as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't diminish the enjoyment. Anyway, if anyone is interested, just google Penn Teller Fool Us and you'll find a bunch of episodes on you tube. Here's one for an example where the guy fools Penn and Teller: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMkhC37HqvU

I've been a fan since high school, but I'm not good at it, and I don't practice like I always want to. I had a friend in high school from Denmark who was an exchange student who lived with us who was a really good magician. He got me interested in it. I know very little about a few of the tricks.
I also love to catch the clips of "Fool Us" on YouTube. My wife and I watch them together almost once a week. Some of the ones I've seen have really stumped me.

The magic here is how things get lost and broken in the presence of 3 kids and nobody sees how it happened, or blame goes to a ghost. No fooling other magic for a long time.

I discovered the 'magic' yesterday, first seeing Emmy the cat sitting innocently on the foyer table, and then when I am out of sight, hearing a 'clink' and some rattling. Came back in the room and she's sitting innocently again while an ornament is on the floor. This explains the branches pulled out of the artificial tree, the ornaments on the floor, and even the tree skirt pulled out and made into a bed. It's like having a toddler!!

I have worked through most of the tricks in the whole series, but not all. Some are alarmingly easy, and some I haven't taken the time to figure out. Also, some of them are now for sale by the magician who performed them, or by the one they copied from. Anyway, if there are any you want to know, just ask and I'll see if I can remember. I'm not an expert in this stuff, but I have spent far too much time recently looking into it.

Yeah, some of them have been so terribly easy they were embarrassing to watch, but a couple have been real head scratchers. I also like to catch that show called something like "Magic's secrets revealed" or whatever it was, (not sure of the name) where the masked guy who looks like a character from a Mexican wrestling program teaches the audience how they are done as part of the show.

I just watched some of those masked guy clips on you tube. Some are interesting, but others were so obvious that even I could figure them out. Probably good for doing with kids, though.

I agree. I think my favorite stuff is close up magic and not the big stage stuff, because it seems like it requires more skill to fool somebody who is right in front of you. My friend I mentioned earlier taught me a few card tricks, but the thing that impressed me most about him was the skill he had with sleight of hand using coins, etc. and that's just all practice. He could keep a stack of dollar size coins rolling around his fingers with both hands and reverse directions, etc. I was pretty impressed by that. I might start practicing again over my break. I have a month off coming at the end of this week.

In fact, what kind of used to turn me off about magic is all the elaborate stage productions that are/were on TV. I guess I'm thinking about David Copperfield et al. Too much of show biz if you know what I mean. I lived in So Cal about 20 years ago and got invited to the Magic Castle along with some other friends. It's basically some kind of private club for magicians, but also a restaurant and they do performances as well. We saw lots of close up tricks, including sitting right at a card table and I could never catch any of it. It was super fun, but I got a giant head ache trying to keep up!
