Does anyone else try to watch some or all of the movies nominated for Best Picture?
So far, I've seen American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Dallas Buyers Club. I will likely watch Blue Jasmine and Captain Philips on-demand, but probably won't make it out to the theatre for any other movies.
I loved American Hustle - great acting, interesting story, and a fun soundtrack.
I was disappointed with The Wolf of Wall Street. It's a very entertaining movie, but it was basically just the sensational exploits of a criminal. And, what made it worse in my mind is that they didn't really explain very well, if at all, what the criminal activity was. Consequently, it comes across as another in a long line of movies where the rich guy on wall street is bad. That's such a tired trope, IMO.
Dallas Buyers Club was really, really good. It used to be that I couldn't stand Mathew McConaughey, but his later roles are much better and this one was incredible. Also, for those of you who have issues with the FDA (thinking of you, IDVGuy), this one offers an additional treat.
I have mixed feelings on seeing 12 Years a Slave. It's supposed to be good, but I'm not sure I really want to see another movie about slavery. If anyone has seen it, I'd like to know if it somehow has something new to say about the subject.

Hi, Welcome back. Sorry no. I'll blame you he he... Not really but I've been reading some books where I think you added some to the list, and trying to give guitar and exercise time too. I had movies in mine for some kids weekends or trips coming up. Thanks for the comments on those.

I've only seen Captain Phillips, and I loved it. I plan to check out the others soon. I'd read that Mathew McConaughey lost a lot of weight to portray the main character. When I saw the trailer, I was stunned by how thin he looked. Reminds me of the same thing that Christian Bale did for a film a couple of years ago (forgot the title).

That Christian Bale movie was The Mechanic. I didn't like that one too much and never finished it.
So, despite saying I wouldn't likely go to the theater, we ended up going to Gravity yesterday. Good movie and seeing it in IMAX and 3D was an added bonus. We went b/c I read it was a frontrunner for winning Best Picture. Good movie, but nowhere near as good as American Hustle and Dallas Buyers Club, IMO. My son and I watched Captain Philips yesterday afternoon. That was good as well but not a lot of suspense since I knew the real story fairly well. Still, it was a good movie.

Well, I'm killing a few min here to drop stress before the next work stop of the day! The stress is dealing with someone who has "Flying by the seat of my pants is my mode of transportation" on his Linkedin page on a topic that's not seat of the pants - electronic commerce. At least I'm old or smart enough to know there's no logic when somebody is quick to go in fight or flight mode, and competitive but poor at details. I thought you suggested the book Cloud Atlas that I finally read. It was good. I will do a movie when the kids and I have spring break and keep at the reading list when I finish two text books this week.

I haven't heard of Cloud Atlas, so that wasn't my recommendation...
