I'm gathering some interesting observations from friends, family and news in the area damaged by the hurricane as well as some other forums I follow.
Some of these people are already used to walking, using a bike and the vehicles they have vary from frugal to thirsty for fuel. Some are also living much closer to where they make their living. Others in or more toward the modern way of petroleum and electricity doing more for them and needing more of it.
A friend who transferred with his job to NYC in Aug has pointed out how much better he's doing with a bicycle and 4 cyl hatch back than coworkers in same neighborhood. He contrasted one without bike and car that uses almost more fuel being rather upset while he's been finding fresh food and places to charge his phone.
I am going to check in with my cousin in NJ to see if there's new found love for the old 4 cyl Camry still in the family instead of the AWD luxury sedan I know he loves to drive. Also ask if the bike is now for more than his fitness rides.
We are very far from survivalists but do a lot of gardening, rarely eat out, and usually stock food for the sake of convenience and economy. I know what some neighbors' homes are like and it dawned on me that we'd do a lot better if we didn't have power for some days.

Yup, those bikes are going to be great in obstacle-laden/sand piled roads! Watch out for the dead bodies in Staten Island as well!

Yup, those bikes are going to be great in obstacle-laden/sand piled roads! Watch out for the dead bodies in Staten Island as well! Yeah they are great for all that. News I caught said there's been a sudden and big spike of commuting by bike on top of the 200% increase that's already occurred in the recent past.

So where is the invisible hand of private sector touchee-feelee love?
Oh that's right... power cuts... people can't use their credit cards to pay for the essentials... so the government will have to step in to help..

Oh, I'm sure there are - in those communities where there is no gas and where it's possible to move around. How about places like Long Beach Island, NJ. Staten Island? Parts of Long Island? Do you live in a damn bubble? How about getting in your car, driving into NY and donating your bike? Or simply going into those communities hardest hit and biking through them to see what it's like? Oh, that's right, you can't even GET there with all the damage and restrictions.

Oh, that's right, you can't even GET there with all the damage and restrictions. For the sake of community, it would be nice to have dialog with you that isn't a waste of disk space, bandwidth and time. I think I'm more of a help donating to charities with a presence like you mentioned, and that even lets me go do more volunteer work locally today (10 AM and 1 PM if you insist). I wouldn't go close to a disaster area if it was not my job or under proper supervision to do work. Those present have enough problems with resources and human behavior. I've volunteered sand bagging and with canoe when floods have happened near me but otherwise give money and would not take your suggestion. When I've donated bikes it's a local place or international group who get it done. That makes it efficient and anonymous to the recipient. A friend's facebook posts, updates from others, news and content from other forums I follow are showing bikes and feet as good choices whether it's on pavement or in rougher travel. I'm not talking about athletes in queer clothing on tiny bikes but practical transportation. I will be honest admitting that I didn't always realize or consider how useful some more time on my feet or with a bike really is. Same for the fewer cylinders I mentioned. I bet I know which combo of Infiniti V8, Camry 4 cyl or bicycle my cousin in NJ is driving this week. They were spared terrible damage to property but not crossing to NYC to work.

Are you not getting that some of these areas are uninhabitable and often impassable due to hazards on the road? That people are dead, some still suffering? And yet you create a snotty 'see I told you it's better to ride a bike' thread?
BTW, I'm still waiting for you to comment back on my thread describing VA Power/easements. Anything else you want to assume there as well, y'know without the proper documentation in your hands?

Anything else you want to assume there as well, y'know without the proper documentation in your hands? Yeah I'm getting that - news, chats and photos from friends and family living and working in NYC and NJ, the linesman family member. It's pretty clear the whole area hit by the storm is not a wasteland and that life has to go on. It's pretty clear that feet, in some cases a bike, and in nearly all cases saving gasoline is a big help. I'm not assuming any details about your property. I do have some general ideas from my day job because in the US I see the rules are same if not quite similar when some of my projects are dealing with other areas. I don't know what's snotty to consider how my friends and family right there are doing and how without the specific thoughts or being part of the prepared movement we might do better than some around us if a disaster happened here. Above all it would be nice if you considered your behavior here. Do you think the way you so often gripe, link crap, and fight does much to make this an interesting or even decent community? It's down to a very few active members and it's often when your crap makes me wonder where I could listen to and learn from others here without you. Just hush or stay away if you can't offer decent support for your opinions or any respect for people who don't think or feel like you. Take a step back and see how some who share same bits of your political interests can reply with reasonable food for thought and some occasional honest humor.

Nice dodge. Still no response to where the private sector is in helping with the $30 billion. Maybe they are relying on the government to do it for them, huh? The truth, from respectable journalism, is that the help was not rejected. The guys misinterpreted the paperwork they had to fill out. That's what happens when you get your news from rightwing rags like Dailycaller.com. Might as well get your news from Glen Beck.

I don't contribute with the frequency that the "very few active members" do, but I read most all of the posts each day. I consider myself a member of this community and I sincerely hope that Linda does not follow your suggestion. I may not always agree 100% with Linda, but always find her posts equally as substantive, informative and on topic as any here. My .02
